Ailsa

Ailsa
‘Ailsa’ is inspired by my love of the seaside and evokes the beautiful blue sea and the frothy white waves from my favourite beaches in the West of Scotland. Her name is derived from the Ailsa Craig, a volcanic island in the Firth of the Clyde.
Due to the handmade nature of The Obsidian Wave this hat is a one-of-a-kind piece.
Using traditional millinery techniques the base has been made by handblocking navy blue sinamay on a wooden saucer block which is is approximately 25cm (10”) wide. The edge of the saucer has been trimmed with a strip of navy blue sinamay and extended a further 2.5cm (1”) using white and silver crin to give a lovely soft rolled edge. The crin has been hand sculpted to create trimmings for the surface and side of the hat.
‘Ailsa’ could be recreated in different colours for you, but due to the handsculpted nature of the crin no two pieces will be identical.
The piece comfortably sits on the head on a black satin hairband.
This is a perfect design to be worn to weddings, ladies day at the races (espiecially Ascot) or any other special occasion where a hat is an essential part of your outfit.
