The Obsidian Wave is a modern elegant sculptural saucer style hatinator and when i was designing and making the hat it evoked memories of a beach at night where the waves are almost black against the golden sand in the moonlight.

Due to the handmade nature of The Obsidian Wave this hat is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Using traditional millinery techniques the base has been made by handblocking ‘Antique Moss’ sinamay on a wooden saucer block which is is approximately 25cm (10”) wide. The edge of the saucer has been trimmed with a strip of black sinamay and extended a further 2.5cm (1”) using black pleated crin to give a lovely soft edge. The pleated crin has been hand sculpted into a rolling sweep across the surface of the hat and extends to the back of the hat.

The piece comfortably sits on the head on a metal hairband that has been covered in the same ‘Antique Moss’ sinamay that the saucer has been made of.

This is a perfect design to be worn to weddings, ladies day at the races (espiecially Ascot) or any other special occasion where a hat is an essential part of your outfit.
